Chapter 28: She Caught Him at the Bedroom Door
“Who the hell are you? Who gave you permission to come in here?”
Just as Wen Xuxu was staring at those slippers, her emotions teetering on the edge of collapse, a sharp voice cut through the silence from behind.
She snapped back to reality like someone had thrown cold water on her.
“Ah? I—I’m here to see your boss. Is he home?”
She quickly composed herself, then turned around to face the person who’d appeared behind her.
A maid, mid-forties, her expression already darkening with suspicion at the sight of Wen Xuxu barging in uninvited.
“See our master? I didn’t hear anything about this.”
“Wait—really? I was sent over by your boss’s assistant at the company. Didn’t he tell you? Maybe you should just go ask him yourself—he’ll know.”
Wen Xuxu instantly threw Lin Ziyang under the bus.
But the maid just stared blankly, like she hadn’t heard a word. Then, not long after, footsteps echoed from upstairs—the sound of someone descending.
“Wen Xuxu? Who let you in?”
Huo Sijue stood at the top of the stairs, hair still damp from the shower, his tall, lean frame draped in simple loungewear: a soft gray V-neck cotton sweater and white casual pants. He looked effortlessly relaxed—like a man who’d just stepped out of a dream. But even in that casualness, there was something unmistakable about him—an old-world elegance, a quiet authority that radiated from every inch of him.
Wen Xuxu blinked. “Lin Assistant? He said you needed me to come treat you. Wasn’t that what he told you?”
“Lin Ziyang? Wen Xuxu, even liars have limits. Do you really think I’d ever give him an order like that?”
No one expected it—this man flat-out denied it. And with the word “lie,” his pale, striking face darkened instantly, shadows pooling in his eyes like storm clouds gathering.
Wen Xuxu froze.
Wait—no, this *was* what Lin told her. He brought her here himself, just minutes ago.
That couldn’t be right. If this man had actually ordered it, why would the assistant have let her come in alone?
So… she’d been tricked?
Her stomach dropped.
“Still speechless? Caught red-handed?”
Huo Sijue saw her expression and smirked—cold, cruel, and edged with mockery. He took a step down the stairs.
Wen Xuxu: ……
For a split second, panic surged through her. She stumbled back a few steps.
“You—wait! Just calm down and listen. This *is* real. Lin Ziyang asked me to come. He said you collapsed on the yacht, were rushed to the hospital—so I came to check you. Now that I’m here, can we please just stay calm and let me do my job?”
She fought the urge to bolt. Instead, she offered treatment—calm, professional, almost polite.
What choice did she have now? If she wanted to see her son again, she’d have to play along. Lin Ziyang was right—success might just make this bastard change his mind.
But then—before she even finished speaking—Huo Sijue let out a cold, mocking laugh.
“Let *you* treat me? I’ve got no death wish, thanks.”
His voice dropped, icy and dangerous. “You know exactly what you’re after, Wen Xuxu. You want me dead so you can steal my son. Dream on.”
Damn. The guy wasn’t dumb after all.
Wen Xuxu finally cracked a smile—bitter, sharp, and full of sarcasm.
“No. You’re wrong. I’m not stealing your son. I’m *ruling* through him. Stealing’s too messy. When you’re gone, my son inherits everything—legally, properly. Why would I want to be a queen mother when I could just take him away? Are you kidding? I’d have to be insane.”
“WEN XUXU!! What did you just say? Say it again!”
The words hit like a spark in dry tinder.
Instantly, the air around him turned lethal. A wave of pure, violent intent exploded from his body. His face twisted into something terrifying—dark, thunderous, like a sky about to crack open.
It felt like one more wrong word, and he’d tear her apart.
And yet—just like that—Wen Xuxu, pushed beyond reason, *did* say it.
“Did I say anything wrong? You accused me of wanting your life when I offered to heal you. So if you want me to play along with your fantasy, fine. But let me tell you—*I wouldn’t touch you* if it weren’t for your son. I don’t want him growing up a little orphaned prince. If you begged me, I still wouldn’t help you.”
Silence.
Absolute, suffocating silence filled the grand hall.
Like the moment before dawn—when darkness is so thick it feels solid. Like the hush before a hurricane breaks.
The tension was so thick, it made the skin on her arms crawl.
This was terrifying.
Who *was* this woman? How dare she speak to the master like this? Even Gu Xiaomi—the previous girl—had always danced around him, sweet and submissive. But this woman?
What gave her the nerve?!
The maid who’d first appeared started backing away, desperate to vanish into the shadows.
“What’s going on here?”
Just as everyone in the villa garden braced for bloodshed—just as they expected a massacre—
a small figure suddenly appeared on the stairs above.
